User Guide: User Account Types

WebVisitor.info allows you to create multiple users on your account. Each User can be restricted to only view the statistics for websites that you want them to see. There are also various access levels that allow you to customise the level of functionality you wish to afford to this User.

For example, if you are a builder of websites, you can create a “Customer” account that allows you to create a login for each of your clients that allows them to view the details for their website only and also limits the other functionality that is available to them. For example they cannot access the Billing Centre, the User Management Centre or see any of the Website Groupings you have setup.

This document describes each of the User Access levels and also has a functionality table that will enable you to setup user accounts to get the best benefit from WebVisitor.info.

The “Customising WebVisitor.info” section is also worth reading as this shows you how to customise the header, footer and login screens with your own branding, allowing you to integrate the Stat-Viewer seamlessly into your own company’s website.

Settings User Website Access

You can specify the websites that each user can access. For example you will probably only want a client to view the statistics for their website, not those of other clients or yours. When you create a user, or edit their account details, you can specify the websites they have access to. The screen where this is done is shown below.

Setting the websites a User can access
Setting the websites a User can access

When a user logs in they will only be shown details of website that you have enabled them access to. When they login, they have no indication regarding any of the other websites.

Additionally when you are setting a Users Access to a website you can choose whether to allow them to modify the website settings. If this is enabled the User will be able to access the Website Settings for that website that allows them to change the counter type and also reset all the statistics.

Administrator

The Administrator account, which by default is the type of the first User created when your account was created, allows full unrestricted access to all parts of WebVisitor.info. You should try to limit the total number of Administrator accounts, by using the other account types where appropriate, as this will reduce the potential number of mistakes caused by too many people having full access. There is however no limit on the number of Administrator accounts, however you should have at least one.

The websites Administrator Users have access controlled by the settings as described in the “Setting User Website Access” section. Of course as Administrators have access User Management functionality they can simply go in and alter their settings, so effectively Administrators can access the statistics and configuration for all websites.

Billing and Stats

The Billing and Stats account type is the second most powerful in the system. In summary the differences between this account type and the Administrator are:

  • Cannot create new websites
  • Cannot create, edit or move website groups
  • Cannot alter the Log space assignment or change the service level on the account
  • Cannot create or edit user accounts
  • Cannot Customise the System Branding

Accounts with this level of User Access can access the Invoices and Billing section and so are ideal for Users who deal with the company accounts or need to print off tax invoices.

For a detailed list of features available to this account type see the User Access Levels – Features Table.

Stats Viewer

The Stats Viewer is broadly the same as the “Billing and Stats” account type except that the user has no access the Invoice and Billings sections. In summary the features that the Stats Viewer does not have access to are:

  • Cannot create new websites
  • Cannot create, edit or move website groups
  • Cannot alter the Log space assignment or change the service level on the account
  • Cannot create or edit user accounts
  • Cannot Customise the System Branding

For a detailed list of features available to this account type see the User Access Levels – Features Table.

Customer

The Customer Account Type is the most restricted access level within WebVisitor.info. It is designed to be used by Website Design and Build Companies to provide access to their clients to the tracked data for their website statistics.

The Websites that a Customer Account can access, as with all account types, is determined as described in the “Setting User Access” section of this document.

  • Cannot create websites
  • Cannot create or edit users
  • Cannot view or modify the Company Account information or view or change any of the Invoices or Billing items
  • Cannot change any of the System Customisations
  • Cannot alter log space assignment

Additionally the Website Groupings are not displayed. This is to allow you to place websites into groups without the groupings being known by your customers. To take an example you may have created two website groups, “Good Clients” and “Bad Clients”. Obviously you wouldn’t want the Clients whose websites you have listed in the Bad Clients section to know this so with the Customer account the Groupings are not shown they won't.

The following shows an example of a user viewing their home page as an Administrator and as a Customer. For purposes of demonstration the Customer account has been enabled access on all the Account websites:

Customer Account Support
The customer account does not include the “Contact Customer Support” option. This option allows the user to send a support request to us at WebVisitor.info requesting help. As the Customer Account type is often used in conjunction with the “Customise System Branding” allowing the Users of type Customer to contact us directly may lead to confusion on their behalf. It is therefore up to you to manage the support requirements for Customer Account Users.
